Utilisation patterns of information technology among faculty and research staff in a Nigerian university: impact of its access for job performance

Abstract

Accessibility to information technology( IT) facilities and its utilisation can improve job performance of university academics thus the study investigates use of IT resources and access to it for job performance among faculty and research staff at Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED). Using a survey research design and self-constructed questionnaire tagged ‘ATUQ’ , 286 faculty and research staff were totally enumerated. A response rate of 71% was achieved for the instrument. Two research questions and hypotheses was tested for the study. The study revealed that faculty and research staff at TASUED had access to and utilized the IT resources available adequately with fax and modems being the least accessed and used. There was positive relationship found between access to and use of IT resources by faculty and research staff r=0.66; p<0.01 while gender was not an influencer of access to and use of IT resources of t=0.174, df=201; p>0.05 The study suggested that TASUED management should make more IT resources adequately available and also provide opportunity for faculty and research staff to improve their IT skills for optimal job performance to be sustained.
